A Portrait of Martin Luther King

A Portrait of Martin Luther King

Dr. Martin Luther King’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered 50 years ago. It amazes me that so many of us humans, believe we have the power to be better than someone else based on status, looks, or employment. Isn’t that up to God? Dr. King knew that all men are created equal and God Himself, no one else, gifts us all.

In 1963, Martin Luther King took a stand and shared his beliefs with thousands upon thousands of young and old men and woman: All seeking freedom… They came from various different backgrounds. They united for one common purpose, through prayer and perseverance, and with the courage only God could give, in order to bring forth hope and freedom to those who were oppressed.

Without going into dramatic political debates, I can say that the Reverend Martin Luther King was an electric man. I love the fact that he was a nonviolent activist, who promoted prayer against those who have hurt us. What a magnificent lesson that continues to be today. With the various stabbings and shootings, and the verbal abuse we all face daily, why can’t we all practice a little bit of humanity towards one another? I applaud Reverend Martin Luther King for his ability to share with others the magnitude of God’s love, even in a time of hatred. It’s truly beautiful.

A few years ago, a friend of mine asked that I paint a banner for her black history club’s annual kickoff meeting. I ended up grabbing a large canvas drop cloth and created a painting at least 5 feet in height. It included several noted figures, such as Harriet Tubman and Malcolm X. However, the only figure that I honored in the center of the piece was that of Martin Luther King. On this 50th anniversary of the I Have a Dream Speech, I’d like to share this painting with you all. It is approximately 5 ft by 4.5ft. It is for sale, but if anyone can get it in the White House, I’ll take that instead! 🙂

“They will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” so true!
